“I feel good to be here [in the paddock]. For sure I was missing motor racing and I was still following the championship, my friends and former teams. It is a pleasure to be back and be able to spend time with them” – he said.

Asked if he could pick a favourite in the battle at the top, the Venezuelan said: “It is hard to tell and you can never be sure who will win in the race, but it becomes clear that Mercedes is developing an edge over Ferrari”.

One of the weekend’s surprises was caused by Fernando Alonso, who outqualified and outraced both Williams’ drivers, for which Maldonado scored his only win: “To be honest, McLaren did a very good job. They had a difficult start to the season, but now they made a big step forward and Fernando of course is making a difference as well”.

Maldonado was also asked, when will he return behind the wheel: “Everyone wants me to come back [laugh]! I don’t know, at the moment I am happy to have a family life and to be able to spend my whole time with them. Of course one day, maybe soon, I may wake up and tell myself it’s time. We will see, I will look for something I will enjoy and where I would be able to compete for a strong team. What series would it be, we are yet to see”.
