Pérez: This could be the last Mexican Grand Prix

Racing Point’s Sergio Pérez fears that his home race in Mexico might disappear from the Formula 1 calendar after this year. Organisers of the event held at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez have failed to sign a new deal within specified deadline, but insist the negotiations are still ongoing.

“Racing at home is always great, especially since the Mexican fans have been so great over the last couple of years” – Pérez told ŚwiatWyścigów.pl. “This could well be our last race, so I really hope we can have a fantastic final venue if that’s the case. It would be a very special and emotional grand prix, but obviously I hope that’s not the case and we can have the race for many more years”.

After twelve years of absence, the Mexican Grand Prix was included in the 2015 calendar and stayed in the championship since. However, the change of Mexican government meant the race has lost most of its public funding, making it impossible to re-sign on current terms.

The 2019 Mexican Grand Prix will take place on October 27th.
